Pilgrim Walk on the South Downs, England.

Pilgrim Walk

Pilgrim James sets off striding up Pilgrims Walk 2024

The OS map at the bottom roughly outlines the walk that was taken as a guide for your own spacious wandering/meandering/meditating/simply being.
The walk is horseshoe shaped and takes approximately an hour to complete, walking at a gentle pace. It is moderately steep in places.

Please note that the satellite signal comes and goes at Saddlescombe but it can be accessed up the hill.

  1. The start point is Grid Reference TQ272115 which is reached by crossing the road from the car park and following the track into Saddlescombe Farm where you will see the National Trust New Timber Hill sign. Enter the gate, turn left immediately and follow the path uphill. Go over the stile alongside the metal gate and bear right.

(If the car park is full there are other car parks at Summer Down and Devils Dyke that will involve walking 10 and 20 minutes respectively back down to Saddlescombe Farm)

  1. You will pass a disused chalk quarry on your left as you continue walking up hill.
  2. Walk up hill towards a clump of trees.
  3. Continue walking and you will see three large trees in the distance with wide grass path running through the centre. There is a 360 degree view from the trees.
  4. Moving on from the trees bear right at a fork in the path and you will pass a dew pond.
  5. Rejoin the tack passing a cluster of trees on your left.
  6. Come to a wooden gate, go through it.
  7. Follow a grassy track towards Saddlescombe Farm.
  8. At bottom of the tack go through bridle gate into the farm.
  9. Optional detour to see the Donkey Wheel.
  10. Retrace steps back from the Donkey Wheel, go over stile and turn left walking through farm with cottages on your right.
  11. When track forks bear left to the Wild Flower café for tea and cake.

To return to the car park turn right out of the café and follow track back to end the walk where it began at grid reference TQ272115 before crossing Saddlescombe road back to the car park.
