“I would like to start with the idea of Buddha.  Buddha in the Tibetan language is expressed as sang gye.  This is made up of two terms: sang meaning ‘to purify’ and gye meaning ‘to increase’. To take that on a very basic level, we’ve all got problems, difficulties, things which we don’t like about ourselves and which we want to purify.  We can also recognise that there are good qualities which we want to develop. So we develop ourselves by going on courses, workshops and so on.  That is our general cultural position.”
