“The dzogchen view and practice is a beautiful and effective method to free ourselves and others from anxiety, alienation and confusion. Focussing on the actuality which is always present, although often unattended to due to our immersion in our thoughts and feelings, we come to settle into our ever-present open nature. With this experience we relax and can respond easily within the unfolding of life.”
James begins by saying,
“Generally in Buddhism we start by taking refuge. On the outer level we take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. In the dzogchen tradition we take refuge in the nature of the mind itself. That is to say, the main thing that protects us is something that we already have. The function of the practice is to awaken us to where we are, always already. This refuge that we need is hidden from us by our own creativity. It is the activity of the mind that hides the mind from the mind. This distraction is not caused by something from somewhere else but is a kind of auto-intoxication. We get so caught up in our own imagination that the very nature of imagining becomes obscure. It is not that we have to stop imagining, because imagination is the basis of compassion…”
